From Sig’s Bookshelf: Billy the Kid Comes Home for Christmas

I know a little something about life on tour. The traveling. The fans. The pawtographs. The people telling you how handsome you are.

It’s a lot of responsibility for one dog.

So when Mom and I read Billy the Kid Comes Home for Christmas by Dolly Parton, illustrated by MacKenzie Haley, I felt like Billy and I had something in common.

A Cast Full of Dogs? Yes, Please!

One of my favorite things about this book is that all the characters are dogs—with one very special human guest: Dolly Parton herself!

Now, I generally support putting more dogs in books. But I’m happy to make an exception for Dolly.

Billy’s world is full of music, performing, and the excitement of being a star. I can understand the appeal. Meeting new friends and making people smile are some of my favorite parts of going to events with Mom.

Although my performances usually involve looking adorable and offering a paw. The closest thing to a concert is a story reading. 😉

Even a Star Wants to Go Home

As exciting as touring and fame can be, Billy realizes that home and family matter more to him—especially at Christmas.

That was my favorite part of the story.

I love meeting my readers. I love getting attention. And I certainly appreciate being admired by people with excellent taste in dogs. But after a busy day away, I’m ready to head home with Mom and Dad, find my comfortable spot, and rest.

Being loved by your family feels pretty special, even when nobody is asking for your pawtograph.

Billy’s story gives young readers a sweet reminder that exciting adventures and big dreams can be wonderful, while still leaving room for the people—and pups—who make home feel like home.

Sig’s Final Woof

Billy the Kid Comes Home for Christmas is a sweet holiday read for families who love dogs, Dolly, and spending time together.

I enjoyed seeing another literary pup discover something I already understand: a day full of fans is fun, but curling up at home with your favorite humans is hard to beat.

Especially if Mom reads you a bedtime story.

Paws, love, and just one more story,
