Hi, furends! It’s Sig, and today I’m reviewing a book that has a very special connection to ShueZoo.
The Hound Who Saw, written by local author Willowmeana and illustrated by Jessie Nelson, tells the story of a kind and loving wolf spirit who loses his way after falling under the power of an evil ghost. But deep inside, he remembers that he was once something different—and wishes to be free.
With a little help from a fairy, he gets another chance to discover the goodness and love in the world and, most importantly, to become himself again.
And what happens when he rediscovers joy?
Well… I probably shouldn’t give away everything. But I can tell you that dogs have a very important part to play. 🐾
This book is especially meaningful to my family because Jessie Nelson knew my big brother Remington. She photographed Mom and Dad with Remi, Magnum, and Beretta for their 10th wedding anniversary, and apparently Remi made quite an impression. (This does not surprise me. I’ve heard a LOT about that guy.)
So when Jessie and Willowmeana created The Hound Who Saw, one very familiar blue mantle Great Dane found his way into the illustrations.
Remington is one of the million dogs. ❤️
Mom says that makes the ending hit a little differently for us. I think I understand why.
The Hound Who Saw is an imaginative story about losing yourself and finding your way back through freedom, kindness, joy, and love. And I especially like its explanation for why dogs are here in the first place:
We came looking for people to love.
Personally, I think they got that part exactly right.
